March of Dimes Canada is inaugurating the Assistive Mobile Technology Initiative for people with disabilities.  Between 5 and 10 smart tablets (like an iPad or Galaxy) with accessible apps will be awarded to individuals through a local initiative.  Successful candidates will acquire the devices and related software that will increase their independence and quality of life based on their specific needs.

Eligible applicants must be residents in the Greater Vancouver Area, 19 years of age or older, with a disability that impacts their ability to communicate or to be independently mobile or to enjoy other aspects of a full life.  Individuals must specify how they would benefit from having a mobile assistive technology device. They must also meet our definition of financial need.

The guidelines and application form are attached.  Each applicant must state how an assistive mobile technology device will help him or her to achieve one or more of the following:

  • Increase access to services
  • Explore or control their environment
  • Contribute to their ability to take on new leisure pursuits
  • Contribute to improving their education
  • Assist in their employment objectives
  • Assist in communication, verbal or written

March of Dimes Canada will attempt to match apps for each tablet specific to the particular needs of the successful candidates. Winners will be notified by February 19, and invited to attend Rock for Dimes Vancouver, a special event in Vancouver, for a presentation on the evening of February 25, 2016.
