Sledge Hockey is the Paralympics version of hockey designed for athletes with little to no movement in their lower extremities and requires balance, endurance and upper-body strength. While sitting on a sled with blades, players must use two miniature hockey sticks with metal picks on the end to propel themselves and maneuver the puck.
Sledge Hockey is gaining in popularity, especially with Team Canada looking to defend as Gold Medal Champions right here in BC during the 2010 Paralympics. The sport is designed for athletes with physical disabilities, but also opens to able-bodied players. It represents a great way to unite physically disabled and able-bodied athletes in sport.
SportAbility has modified 10 of our Sledge Hockey sets for use on a gym floor by replacing the blades on the bottom of the sleds with wheels and the picks on the end of the sticks with rubber stoppers. If you are interested in trying out Sledge Hockey on a gym floor or sheet of ice, we do rent out our sleds. You can find rental information here.
SportAbility is always looking for new athletes, officials, coaches, volunteers and sponsors so if you’re interested please don’t hesitate to contact us. We are continually holding
Sledge Hockey events so check out our Calendar of Events page to view these upcoming events.
